Working Men’s Club – Best Young Band In Britain

Well, they are in my opinion! And I’m not alone. A band on the up, making a name for themselves, a band not to be missed if you want to see them up close. They won’t be playing venues this size for much longer.

The most exciting new band out there at the moment” – BBC 1/BBC 6 DJ Huw Stephens.

I have to admit I’m long in the tooth and can be quite cynical about music I’m not familiar with these days but I was totally blown away when I saw the band playing in Newcastle towards the end of 2019. I left the venue with a spring in my step and my musical senses re-invigorated. And my ears ringing 🙂

Named with a nod to the famous Trades Club in Hebden Bridge. Singer and guitarist, Syd Sargeant explains “We grew up in northern towns trying to get in to pubs and in social clubs because that’s all we had. The name is an ode to that,”

Coming from the musical hot bed of Calderwood the band are now signed to the legendary Heavenly record label as are near neighbours The Orielles , there’s definitely something in the water in West Yorkshire.

Having played gigs with The Wedding Present and many others they have also just supported The Fat White Family on their recent sell out tour gaining many new fans along the way.

Working Men’s Club released 2 singles in 2019, the debut “Bad Blood”, a great big slab of post-punk for the 21st Century with an disco beat thrown in for good measure. Whilst follow up “Teeth” has a darker more electronic feel to it. Says singer Sid “We just want to confuse the fuck out of people, in a good way,”  Amen to that!

Live the drums and hi-hat hit you first, before being joined by a bassline Peter Hook would be proud of. Then in comes the guitar that scratches against your psyche before Sydaddresses you with his forthright vocals. The guitar moves on, whirling your ear waves around whilst delivering subtle but powerful harmonies.

Not to be missed!
