The band consists of Martin Metcalfe (guitar & Vocals), Fin Wilson (bass) and Derek Kelly (drums). The trio have been together since the late Eighties when along side Shirley Manson they were members of “Goodbye Mr Mckenzie”. The band changed direction, became Angelfish but Manson soon departed to become famous with “Garbage”.

They carried on in various guises before settling on “Isa and the Filthy Tongues” featuring one Stacy Chavis on vocals and released 2 albums before Chavis departed.

In 2016 the band reappeared in the current line up to release “Jacobs Ladder”  an album described as:

“a colossal, brooding behemoth of a record. It’s all about Auld Reekie, the Athens of the North, call it what you will, Edinburgh even; the ancient, the gothic, the stuck up and the down right dirty, all the denizens of this fine city’s past and present are to be found here in one guise or another.A celebration, of sorts, a lament certainly, to the city that is the spiritual home of The Filthy Tongues.”

It’s clear to see and hear the influences, Nick Cave, PJ Harvey for example  but the style of this ever evolving band is strikingly and individually their own.

The band have played on Teesside 3 times previously with prestigious support slots “Pete Wylie and the Mighty Wah!” and “Brix and the Extricated” as well as a headline show at The Westgarth Club in Middlesbrough to where the band return on Friday 26th October. Tickets available from the venue directly or on line here.

As well as releasing “Back To Hell” Metcalfe has found time to write songs for and occasionally play with “The Skids” as well as performing under the guise of “Martin Metcalfe and the Fornicators”.  He has also just completed some live music/spoken word gigs with Skids front man Richard Jobson. If that wasn’t enough Martin is also a flourishing artist.
